If we bring up a new generation in the spirit of tolerance allowing them to experience other cultures, ideally the possibility of a personal contact, teaching them at least one foreign language and making them proud of their own cultural roots, than we have the chance to raise a generation that is conscious of their values and, at the same time, open to the changes of the contemporary world. Will that be a happy generation? We do not know it, however, it has the chance to be a generation adjusted to the multicultural world which they live in, and that is rather a lot…
The presence of the people that are from another cultural and linguistic sphere transforms the abstract and unknown into something familiar and specific. Children have the chance to see another race, culture and language by getting to know another kind person, above stereotypes and prejudices, and also they can understand that despite all many differences we are all alike.
When the contact with different races, religions, languages and customs occurs in the early childhood, children’s personality is becoming more open and they develop the sense or relativity and, most importantly, the curiosity of the world and people. What is more, it sensitizes children to the global problems and makes them aware of the existence of people’s radically different living conditions. Additionally, it makes them understanding and tolerant towards other people and cultures in case of having contact with them in the future.
Showing the variety of the world has to go hand in hand with strengthening the feeling of pride of their own culture which is crucial for building a child’s identity and feeling of safety. That is why we pay attention to keeping a balance between tolerance, openness and the curiosity of the world, and placing a child in their own culture and treating it as a reason to be proud of.
